Hi, Stephen, I don't want to bother just ask you a couple of questions when you can no problem how can I help I have sent to you a mail about helping you with monitoring I don't know if you receive it ah it is in my queue to read. let me read it real quick and we can talk it was about #2018 Ticket also ok, ok, dont worry no really you have been outstanding on keeping at it give me 5 take your time, thank you So where in Argentina are you currently based? I am in Mar del Plata It a city at about four hours from Buenos Aires most curiosity on my part. Ah pretty temperate I guess. http://maps.google.com/maps/place?ftid=0x9584d94d19d34209:0xdd9670804bfed126&q=mar+del+plata,+argentina&hl=en&ved=0CA4Q-QswAA&ei=oFgGTYC5MKj8ygSb-JDJCA&sll=-37.979858,-57.589794&sspn=0.017591,0.032015&ie=UTF8&ll=-37.962606,-57.622948&spn=0,0&z=14 there it is It is http://maps.google.com/maps?q=mar+del+plata,+argentina&hl=en&ved=0CA4QpQY&ei=2lgGTaSIOI_uyAWV1cThDw&sll=-37.979858,-57.589794&sspn=0.000000,0.000000&ie=UTF8&view=map&geocode=FS55vP0d3j-R_A&split=0&hq=&hnear=Mar+del+Plata,+Buenos+Aires+Province,+Argentina&ll=-37.977154,-57.589817&spn=0.031731,0.066175&z=14&iwloc=A this is a better link It is at the east cost of Buenos Aires State It has a cold weather on winter but nice on spring and summer nice. I think I knew someone from there in College. My kind of weather. it has nices beach You are in New Mexico? I have read on the Internet about you and how you started with Linux because you need to motorize some telescope thats right? correct. a long time ago. I never got the telescope working :). I have made my own telescope a newtonian one 200 mm here is it http://hernan.vivani.com.ar/2005/02/construccion-de-un-telescopio.html ah very cool. this one was about 55 cm (iirc). It got re purposed after I left for a career in Linux awesome the really cool thing was the dome that the scientist had invented. It was a clam shell which could open all the way open. Nice combination: Lunix + Physics Linux + Physics and you were needing the motorization, by serial port I guest actually the system had been built in 1964 or so uff it used a large set of actuators from an artillery gun I think. it was a really crazy setup. sounds terrific Right now I am at a charge of the IT dept of Postres Balcarce It is an food manufacturing company http://www.postresbalcarce.com.ar so I was 20+ miles away from the telescope and could only talk to its parts via a microwave link. The link would allow for up to 9600 baud (sort of) so I ended up getting it to talk back to me via a loopback and was working on a bridge up at the top. Now adays it would ahve been so much simpler to put a system with a SSD drive at the top to talk to all the parts yes, it was a big challenge at this times I think I have had those cookies but this challenges make you grow a lot yes. it did. Ok are you using nagios or some other tool for monitoring by now just Nagios I have monitoring the servers of my company we are going to be upgrading ours to Nagios-3 I only have 5 but it is something We have already done one server and have another ready. My next wants are getting 'smokeping' working can you explain me the smokeping expression? so I can start seeing how our various sites outside of PHX2 are functioning AND how much bandwidth ping monitoring? smokeping is a program that kind of tracks throughput ok, good basically how much latency and droppage is occuring ok using rrdtool as its backbone for tracking Round Robin Database Tool ok, sounds nice correct. I think monitoring is a good subject for knowing the structure and give you a hand In my daily work I do everithng from hardware setup to configuring NFS We were one of the first private companies in Argentina in migrate all the IT structure to Linux very cool. my apologies that my spanish is not very good. dgilmore is much more fluent than me dont worry, just tell me if I dont understood something in the right way So you want first migrate to Nagios 3? or setting up the 'smokeping' monitoring We are migrating hopefully this month to nagios 3. I need to ping all the people who have been working on nagios3 to get them together for a status report. CodeBlock is the person looking at it more than me. If you could... install smokeping on publictest8. [Change the motd to say this machine is working on it.] and see what configuration needs will be needed. I will open a ticket and assign it to you on it. ok, the Nagios version Iam working on is 3.2.2 My servers are on centOS 5.5 and about 50 clients on Fedora 14 ok, no problem out external nagios is 3.2 and our internal is 2.12? We are going to make the noc01.stg to 3.2 and then rebuild noc01 to EL6 and 3.2 but CodeBlock and some others are doing mostly that. I just keep tabs :) ok, very good If I have some doubt, do I bother you ? or I should send a mail to the list ? or here in the IRC channel? np bother me as it comes up. or someone else in #fedora-noc I have a short meeting.. bbl
